A lot of writers used such constructions back in the day. This one is extra successful because hell, even the mirrored lineation tells the story.But you're talking about poetry, George, so I'm going to take this opportunity to be annoying.
Compare that poem, which no one today would read, to this, from a "poet" so popular her stuff is actually on the front shelf at B&N:
