I read this article and the NYT. They're not saying anything different.
Trump's in-year tax liability was $7.5M and he had accrued losses that could be applied against that 2017 bill.
He paid $750 after applying those credits.
Even in his own tweet, Trump didn't refute the $750 he said something to the effect of " like all Americans I was able to deduct depreciation and something else"

The times article was unclear about the amount paid in 2016 and 2017.
The reason was also not entirely clear.
They went out of their way to be ambiguous so they could try to sell the $750 story.
virtually all of that liability was washed away when he eventually filed
Virtually all? What does that mean?
washed away? what does that mean?
eventually filed? When exactly was that? -
This is a weird spin.
Especially the part about ‘most of us pay our taxes this’. As if payroll withholding and obscure carryover tax credits written into law by lobbyists for developers are somehow the same thing.
When a poor family has no tax liability due to the EITC I wonder if this author considers then to have paid $x,000 in taxes. Haha no I don’t.
