It’s a fairly disorganized way of thinking. I for one am generally not predisposed to thinking about twitter much and have decided to not let it into much into my life. Same for Facebook, Instagram etc.

It’s not that I’m swearing it off, it’s just that it’s a rabbit hole that I fail to see how I will be worse off for missing out on.

You may not think of Twitter, but it essentially runs editorial decisions across major media outlets.

I don’t actively browse it myself. Hard to do. I don’t have Facebook, Instagram or Twitter on my mobile phone.

I can’t wait to watch A Social Dilemna on Netflix. From what I understand it should be mandatory watching for all of us.

You know what? I was on the social media hatred bandwagon for quite some time, but to large degree, I was wrong about that.

Yes, social media is practically a misnomer and has very little to do with anything social. Yes, Twitter is an ideal platform for trolling. Facebook is riddled with political memes and long missives about the Deep State from your crazy uncle. Of course, Instagram is flooded with duckface selfies from teenage wannabe influencers.

But that's not all that it is, and if that's on your feed then that's completely and totally your own fucking fault. No one else's.

There are many communities on social media--Twitter included--populated by reasonable people, without an axe to grind, and want to use these platforms for something constructive. Find those people and just block the nutters, that's all you have to do.

          Please love yourself.

Well our use of tweets on this board is the example I was thinking about.

I think for us, Xenon's post explains a lot of it. You said that Twitter is a platform that doesn't really lend itself to organized thinking. You're right. But it does lend itself to someone being first--that's why news organizations rely on it so much. And because we talk about the news here (I'm sure you've noticed), that's how we get the Twitter posts on TNCR.

                  Please love yourself.

I completely agree. I've learned a ton from reddit. I've been genuinely entertained by some great comedians on Instagram that I wouldn't otherwise see.

The reason I stopped though is because checking social media was becoming an unconscious habit. In any moment of downtime or ambiguity on what to do next - my hands had already pulled out my phone, unlocked and opened an app.

Plus I felt like I needed to model good behavior for the little ones.

Nobody I follow, or follows me on social media has ever met me personally. No friends, no family members. I use social media to learn about a skill from a community of people who are trying to do the same, not impress my acquaintances with whatever the fuck bullshit would make my life sound more interesting.

Further, when I talk about these things in familiar company I'm often told that I have too much time on my hands. So I'm more than fine with the separation.

I am a minimalist (and getting worse all the time; by this time next year I'll be living in a tree.) The sheer noise in the social media drives me crazy. If social media were a city, they'd be Calcutta.

I don't mind social media in general, but I cannot abide Twitter. It's dreadful.

I admit I like reddit very much. It’s a bigger rabbit hole than twitter on some level but often people that relay more info and less tooting their own horn or being a pipe for someone else’s rhetoric.
