It is not for nothing. They are expecting some sort of influence.
Maybe their company (Company X) wants to do a project in Country A. They are competing against Company Y. Company Y comes in cheaper, but the project rules are are changed such that only Company X can win.
Why would they do that? Because the person high up in teh company is the son of the Vice President or President. I think it is nave to think it is not going on.

Mr. Trump and his family have been hounded by the entire news industry for 4 years. If it was even remotely possible to find the imaginary story you are talking about, they probably would have found it.

Yeah, I assume they are corrupt, because well, they just are. And if they aren't corrupt, well, they just haven't been caught, yet.
Sounds like paying off people in the U.S. government is like the expected bribes and corruption in mainland China / CCP.
It's not the money, when it becomes just an expectation of doing business. Back in the day, there would have been truth seekers, and people would go to jail. Of course not all, but some, in order to make it certain that there was a rule of law in this country, and not a rule of men with unimaginable amounts of money plus censorship via media. We are all dupes. At least back in the day, I might have been born not only into wealth, but damn, I'd make a great King or something. Also back in the day, there actually were truth seekers, at least in Oz.

If I told you it had been discovered that Donald Trump Jr. Had recieved a wire transfer of 3.5 million dollars from the wife of the mayor of Moscow, who was personal friends with Putin, would you say that was proof of collusion with Russia? What if I told you that proof had been discovered that Trump Jr. Had wired tens of thousands of dollars to various Russian and Ukranian prostitutes. Would you say that showed collusion with Russia? Of course you would. For nearly 4 years you have parroted the democrat lie about Trump and Russian collusion in spite of the fact that not one solitary thread of evidence was ever produced. You would have roasted Trump if even so much as a phone call had been discovered.
Yet here we are, nearly 4 years and a hundred million or so dollars spent trying to nail Trump with "Russian collusion", and solid, verifiable proof that both Joe Biden as well as his son, his brother, and his brother's wife, have been getting rich from colluding with Russia, and you fold like a cheap shirt.
