Chagos, Diego Garcia, a stunning handbrake u-turn from Trump(CF)

First Rubio in May 2025 welcoming the UK Mauritius deal:
    https://www.state.gov/u-s-support-for-uk-and-mauritius-agreement-on-chagos-archipelago/

Today Trump Jan 2026 lays into Starmer:
    https://www.lbc.co.uk/article/trump-turns-on-uk-over-chagos-islands-5HjdR2n_2/

    Trump writes
"Shockingly, our “brilliant” NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER."

He claimed that China and Russia would be this as an "act of total weakness", and used the action to justify why the US should take over control of Greenland.

Trump could be thought of as an enigma, a wild card. Personally I see him as suffering from dementia and way too old to govern. If he was the UK PM there's no doubt he would have been removed by now.

P.S in case it is deleted here is Rubio on the US website in May
Today, the United States welcomed the historic agreement between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Mauritius on the future of the British Indian Ocean Territory—specifically, the Chagos Archipelago.

We commend both the United Kingdom and Mauritius for their leadership, vision, and commitment to ensure that Diego Garcia remains fully operational for the duration of this agreement. We look forward to working closely with both governments to strengthen our collaboration in support of regional peace and stability.

Following a comprehensive interagency review, the Trump Administration determined that this agreement secures the long-term, stable, and effective operation of the joint U.S.-UK military facility at Diego Garcia. This is a critical asset for regional and global security. President Trump expressed his support for this monumental achievement during his meeting with Prime Minister Starmer at the White House.

This milestone reflects the enduring strength of the U.S.-UK relationship—a relationship that, as demonstrated by the U.S.-UK trade deal announced on May 8, extends far beyond defense to encompass economic growth, innovation, and shared global leadership.

Although the United States is not a party to this agreement, we remain responsible for operating the U.S. Naval Support Facility on Diego Garcia, which continues to play a vital role in supporting forward-deployed operational forces and advancing security across the region.

The United States values its partnership with both the United Kingdom and Mauritius, and we stand ready to continue our collaboration to promote peace, security, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean and beyond.

I made a comment on FB that it was not the goal of securing Greenland strategically that I objected to but the ham-handed way it's been gone about. For which I was told I did not understand political gamesmanship. There's no gamesmanship, it's pure bullying at a cost to European relations that far outweighs the value of even the pyrrhic victory that might be accomplished. The same applies here. I don't know all the background, but I'd imagine there has been a longstanding agreement between the UK and Mauritius that this would happen.

      We're approaching 25th amendment territory.

If he was interested in US and Western national security more than in mineral wealth then working within the NATO framework would sense. If he was interested more in forcibly divesting the country of it's natural resources, the current approach would be the best one.

So, we're kind of left with an obvious conclusion.

Alternatively, he could just need something to take his mind off the fact that he can't get it up any more, which seems as likely an explanation as anything else.

        I was only joking

A not uncommon apologetic claim by loyal MAGA adherents ( MAGAts) who have run out of excuses to defend the demogogue. Right in line of their other disingenuous fall back to maintain that Trump is not a politician - their way of saying cut him some slack as he is merely riffing and spitballing off the top of his head. That latter distractor may have had some credence in 2015 but by the end of 2017 after two years in office it rings hollow.

What’s happening now with Greenland is not political gamesmanship. It is the pathological ravings of a lunatic wholly unsuited for the role he has assumed.

In any event, he pulls the same crap with every single issue... threats and bullying. Those tactics have their place, but not within the most successful alliance in history.

He is single-handedly isolating the US through his unacceptable behaviour and locking it into a pillory of his very own making. An utter fool.

Maybe 20 years ago. He's sounding more and more like a mad old bastard of late.

He is clever. That’s as close an ambiguous compliment as I would make of “it”.
