Trivia question, originating from a 1928 Popular Mechanics ad...Hints:

    1. The item could still be useful in today's society.
    2. The price was $9.75, shipped.
    3. It would cost more to ship the item today, than it's original cost.
    4. The item would not be sold in the back of a modern magazine.
    5. The item was first seen in 1893.

What was the item being sold?

“Cry havoc and let slip the DOGE of war!”

                              alt text

                              30-40 Krag Carbine.

Adopted by the U.S. Army in 1893, Krag was the first small-bore, smokeless centerfire fielded by the army. Roosevelt armed the Rough Riders with it, while some U.S. troops were still carrying 45-70's.

Interestingly enough, Roosevelt didn't carry a Krag, but carried an 1895 Winchester chambered in 30-40 Krag during the Spanish-American War.
