The original Microsoft Word used 400KB of memory. Today’s version uses 4GB. Please explain to me what Word does today that necessitates 10,000 times the memory?

Every word and sentence you see on Word's user interface in multiple languages.
Code from older versions of Microsoft Words retained to maintain backward compatibility.
Expect even bigger applications as Microsoft (and many other software shops) try to ship AI models with everything.
