Yeah It’s not really the oligarchs fault that housing is so expensive. I doubt I’ll like left populism any more than I like the version on the right.
But thinking purely politically, guys like this can probably win where traditional democratic candidates can’t.

You realize that we have a significant voting block that supports both Trump and Bernie?
Wait, I know you do, but it’s amazing how many don’t. Man, I really wish DeSantis had pounded the hell out of that orange lame duck in the primaries.

There is a modest amount of blame for house pricing due to the investment groups buying up real estate, but that’s a local problem that can be handled locally, and beyond that, while there are a few exquisitely wealthy hedge fund managers, most of the ownership of those funds are firemen, teachers, etc… Wall St. is Main St.

The main reason housing is so expensive is that we make it illegal to build new housing with very few exceptions. And those exceptions often require negotiations with bureaucrats and politicians who are beholden to people who have an interest in not building more housing.

Karla’s hometown in Ohio is having a debate right now about expanding 2 subdivisions. The community is against it for the stupid reason that they believe it will overcrowd the schools. I was peaking over Karla’s shoulder as she was reading a social media post on it. I had her post “typically, when communities grow, the tax base expands while reducing the overall individual tax burden per household. Expanding those neighborhoods will help fund new and better schools, enriching the community as a whole.”
Now she is hated in Batavia and can never return again.

Beyond that, in my area? Almost all new residential construction is multi family dwellings available FOR RENT. All of these developers have realized that selling the properties immediately after construction is a short term win, but rentals will add up to being far more profitable in the long term.

Education, housing, and healthcare are the three industries where the government restricts supply and subsidizes demand. Of course that makes them more expensive.
Maybe AI will save us with education and healthcare. Maybe falling population will save us with housing.

It's a step in the right direction, no pun intended. At least he's talking about things people actually give a flying fig about.

I read a white paper that said that a major solution to solving the housing is to eliminate zoning rules. Things will sort out.
Someone wants to build an apartment next to a chemical plant, they will be able to, but realistically, they will know it will never rent. And vice versa.
But, some areas may need apartments or condos, they should be allowed to build them.

Yeah the big issue is people don’t want the overall density in their neighborhood to increase. Parking, traffic congestion, school crowding, etc are all (often) legitimate concerns.
But at some point something’s got to give. Unless we perfect teleportation or the population decreases.
