"Away"

On Netflix:
Link to videoWhat crap.
I've just got it on in the background while I waste time here. I'm 6 episodes in and it's 20% Mars mission, and 80% psychology of the crew and their families. If I wanted family drama, I'd watch The Kardashians.

That's about what I figured, happy I didn't watch
If I'm going to watch something it has to fall into one of two categories:
- Something that is completely engrossing and demands my total attention ("The Shield")
- Something that can be on in the background (like this) while I do something else. Most TV is like this.

Finished it this afternoon, while reading news and doing other shit on my Mac.
Terrible.
Just terrible.
It's 10 episodes, each about 50 minutes long.
If they had gotten rid of all the extraneous stuff (teenage daughter, paralyzed husband, Chinese authoritarianism) it would probably be about 5 episodes, perhaps only 4 ½. It did a credible job of portraying the unknown, and unexpected, problems of a spaceflight that would last months, but, ferchrissakes, get rid of all the crap.
If you want to tell a space tale, tell it. Leave the other crap to Hallmark (in a negative, Spock's-beard universe, of course).

Just watched Away. It feels like we've spent a year getting to Mars. We liked it more than George- but I agree quite a bit of focus on each of the character's personal lives. What's interesting is that Netflix decided not to renew even though it had good ratings - perhaps a result of pandemic and a desire to control costs.
