Im not really sure what the affect of this is. I mean, sure, if you’re here and don’t register they could deport you as a criminal. But they can just deport you anyway if they find you without this in place.
And any immigrant in any formal process whether it’s an asylum claim or relative of a citizen, is already in the system.

I think what it does is drive the self-deportation train for some and gives the Administration a little more due process leeway for the unregistered.

I suppose, for example if they make it a misdemeanor. Visa overstay is like a traffic ticket, not criminalized. But if you’re a visa overstay and don’t register, it’s probably easier to send them
to a foreign prison if they’re the wrong colorhome.
