The Constellation class is a prime example of taking a proven design, trying to add capability until you muck it up and blowing the cost through the roof. We should have built it under license with minor (very minor) modifications.
Another area is diesel subs. There are some very good designs available that could perform some missions we need at a much lower cost than a nuclear sub.
Lastly, we need support ships and many of those designs are little changed from WW2. They should be cheap.
