    In my email...

    Dear Licensees,

    Scam Alert
Scammers are out there, and endlessly inventive, so beware!!

The board wishes to reiterate the fact that neither we nor any federal agency would ever place a call or fax you to tell you that your license is in danger that demands money or remuneration in some way. That is not how it works!!

Examples of these scams frequently come from a phone call that may look like or “spoof” our number or the main number of a state or federal agency, or on some kind of “official” stationery. These calls, faxes or letters always claim a sense of urgency and require extremely quick action of some kind to protect your license or status. That is not how we conduct an investigation. There are various processes and procedures which occur during investigations, we encourage licensees to obtain counsel, we never suggest secrecy or urgency, as so many of these scams do.

If you receive a communication alleging to be from us or another agency and it appears to be suspicious, it probably is. Please call our main number (504)568-6820 or the main number listed on another agency’s website if it comes from them, rather than the number listed on the letter or given to you by the caller. After you ascertain the direct number from the agency website, ask to speak either to the investigations department or the specific investigator listed on the complaint or communication.

Neither we nor any other official agency would ask you for money in any form before the investigation is completed and without due process. We would also never initiate a complaint via text with clickable links.

Please let us know if you are the target of an attempted scam, so we can warn others.

Please be aware, and protect yourself from fraudulent schemes.

    Thank you,

Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners

It is fun reading some of the accounts of people who "play" with scammers. I used to read the stories on a website called 419eater which was scammer payback.

On story was so funny - about a guy that had a scammer traveling across Africa on the promise of some payoff which never existed. LOL
