Last known veteran flier from the Battle of Britain. Shot down four times during the war.

Amazing.
My dad used to tell me about watching the vapour trails from the dogfights above London in 1940, and seeing the squadrons of Hurricanes and Spitfires flying out to do battle - he would have been 12. The kids thought it was the most amazing thing, I guess the adults probably felt somewhat differently.

A long time ago, like a really long time ago, I read a book 'Ginger Lacy, Fighter Pilot', which a fantastic telling of the WW2 RAF experience, based around the pilot in question. It's well worth a read - apparently it's available on Amazon.
