Interesting opinion piece. Japan struggles with it, but a lot is due to the aging population. Much harder to make close friends as a person gets older, and as the close friends you have begin to pass on, the circle gets even smaller.

I'm open minded and open hearted to anybody, as long as they have identical political beliefs to me.

I cannot imagine choosing friends based on their political positions.

As long as they have a firm grasp of the The Lord of the Rings, chess opening theory and/or Western musical harmony, we don't need to talk about what an asshole their politician of choice is.

I tell you, Friday nights at Chez Phibes are really something. Well, they would be if anybody ever came round.

            I was only joking

I have cast off at least five rabid Putin sympathizers as friends. Also distanced myself from a couple of NDP supporters over their vocal support of Hamas and the Palestinian cause.

Hey! Aren't we all friends? So I guess I'm covered for a long life!
