We were eating at a chain Mexican place (Los Toltecos). I ordered a side of Chilis Toreados, which is basically blistered jalapeños, serranos, and sautéed onions. It was delicious. When I ordered, the Hispanic waitress gave me a smirk and almost an eyeroll. At the end of the meal, she came back to collect the plate and asked where were the chilis. I pointed out the plate with the stems left. She got indignant and said “you actually ate them?” “Yes, they were pretty good”. She then said “but you’re wh…, I just didn’t think you would like them. “ She walked away looking befuddled…

      No, sir.

You were the perpetrator of cultural appropriation.

      Do better.

      Only non-witches get due process.

I debated whether to share this here, but since this thread happened, here you all go. Peak woke hand wringing about cultural appropriation, brought to me by a mailing list I'm on so I can keep tabs on such things.

I stress that this is presented as serious essay work of a serious thinker.

To set the stage, it was written by a black Berkeley law professor and author, whose white friend, a life-long friend from their childhood, quoted a Beyonce lyric in an instagram post about learning roller skating. The professor wrote a 26 page essay on the emotional turmoil this cultural appropriation caused, and the fractured relationship, and how, or if, they managed to heal their friendship.

My dinner order tonight included the phrase, "Thai spicy and yes I'm serious about that."

They delivered as promised, which is why I started drafting this in the bathroom.

          Please love yourself.

Funny, as an experiment for lunch at work I ate a microwave meal - "Trader Joe's Fiery Chicken Vindaloo."

It was, admittedly, a bit warm. To the point where if you got it on your lips, there was actual burning sensation. Quite unusual for a supermarket ready meal.

            I shall be buying more.

            I was only joking

The author. That makes sense. She could pass for white, but not for pretty.

Right, I forgot that it is impossible for a white man to be a victim of racism and I must examine my own actions to see what I did to offend the LatinX of color.

Damn! A 26 page screed about what it's like too hate yourself for being black and for being a woman. I started out reading the paper smirking and wincing but then I kind of started to feel feel sorry for her. In person she probably a very toxic person to know.

                  It is an interesting read.

Yes it was interesting that by the end, the friend blocked her and just told her that she lacked the energy to deal with this stuff. That tracks.
