The article is pretty messy. The hotel that had the owner leave in December, there are quotes from renters that they had paid their rent so why chip in for electric? Like who did they pay rent to?
Also the story talks about how these motels grow with disparate people who have no low income housing alternatives in bad times.
It is a depressing article and there is a point that the toll of Covid when you have everyone stay home is in the millions of people who have lost their livelihood, dignity and means to support loved ones.
Hard to give Free healthcare to All, free education, deal with the newly impoverished but I’m sure it will be easy for Biden.

Florida is covered with small, independent motels that thrived prior to the interstate highway system, but then found themselves with no travel traffic, their only hope for a renter was to do by the week rentals to low income locals. I would imagine the maintenance costs were spiralling, the tenants were a pain in the ass, the owner - probably the son of the original owner - got too old to put up with the BS and just didn't come back.

Interesting (and sad) article. It is hard to imagine a 17 year girl having to grow up like that.
That is someone who life choices were out of her control.
