Maybe it's time to refocus.

Why do academic medical centers exist? It's primary function is not research, although that's nice. The primary purpose of an academic medical center is to teach and train healthcare professionals. Medical school students. Specialty residents. Physician Assistants. Nursing, including NPs and advanced nursing degrees. Allied Health, including physical therapists, rad techs, laboratory scientists, respiratory therapists and pharmacists.
Many of these healthcare fields are laboring with far too few trained personnel.
While research is nice and centers of excellence are desirable, there is a lot of overlap in research and in medical focus. Perhaps it's time we re-prioritized the mission of the academic medical center.
