    They rode like a buckboard.

In my youth I knew some other beautiful things that had that quality.

        Yes they did.

            10-15 mpg.

My 1968 Mustang (Inline-6) got about 12-13 mpg.

Gas was 24¢ or so per gallon.

The fuel tank on my 'Stang was 16 gallons. If I drove it down to the last gallon, I cold fill it up for about $3.50. That's about $31.55 in today's dollars.

But...I could only drive about 180 miles on that tank. About 17¢ a mile.

My Audi gets 22 mpg (in the city). 16 gallon tank. If I fill it with 15 gallons, it'll cost $60 (at $4/gal). I can drive 330 miles at that mpg - 18¢ a mile.

OK, but it meant that people happily bought gas-guzzling muscle cars even though it cost as much as it does now to run them. Your comment implied it was a lot cheaper back then so nobody worried about gas.

I guess you can interpret it that way. However, my comment shows that transportation, per mile, is marginally cheaper now than it was back then.
