COVID deaths per day

So why has the number of daily deaths dropped out of the news? These days all I hear is a total death count (I suppose because it is the one thing that keeps going up no matter what).
Is it possible we are on the downside of this and it will continue to trail off into the fall?
Is no one talking about this because 1) Democrats want to keep up the drum beat of fear and 2) Republicans don't want to talk about it at all?
