I am trying to understand:
Navy Seal team kills Osama Bin Laden
Vice President Biden says it is Seal Team 6from an article about the sad crash
QUOTE
Under cover of darkness on the night of August 6, 2011, a special ops team that included a group of U.S. Army Rangers began an assault on a Taliban compound in the village of Jaw-e-Mekh Zareen in the Tangi Valley. The firefight at the house went on for at least two hours, and the ground team called in reinforcements. As the Chinook CH-47 transport helicopter (call sign: Extortion 17) carrying 30 U.S. troops, seven Afghan commandos, an Afghan civilian interpreter and a U.S. military dog approached, the insurgents fired on the helicopter and it crashed to the ground, killing all aboard.
UNQUOTEFour months later, Taliban fighters know exactly what helicopter these troops will be on, though my knowledge is that the Seal team often doesn't even know when and where they will be going until the time of mission
Taliban knew that the US Army Rangers would be calling for backup, and knew that the back up would be SEAL team?
Taliban has a good enough understanding of specific US troop units and movements to find this one helicopter, while ignoring all other helicopters of less secret missionsFor me, this doesn't make sense. Very very sad, but from my outside eye, i dont think that there is anything to the story.

Doesn't matter. The fact is that Biden outed them and their identities immediately became known. Then, they get targets on their backs. It's called covert ops for a reason.

@Jolly maybe I am incorrect, but I don’t think they were named by person, only unit named.
And in this case, the helicopter was called as backup
- how would anyone know how the fight would go?
- how would they know they were going to call backup?
- how would they know who was going to be called for backup?
- how would they know exactly what type of helicopter would be arriving and when it would arrive when it wasn’t even known that it would be coming? Even the US Didn't know that they would be needed.
I believe that the Taliban was looking to shoot any US soldier, like they had done previously.
Again, it was a very very very sad incident, but I think if the helicopter was filled with US army men from a different unit, it would have been the same result.

Again, ad infinitum ad nauseum, you do not reveal the names of covert operators.
Full stop. Period. It's wrong.

There you go.
Trump revealed Navy Seal identifies and location in Iraq:

Still wrong.
OTOH, Trump goofed up in a photo. Biden's naming was deliberate. And specific.
There is a difference.
@Jolly Yes and no. With the raid on Osama Bin Laden, even me could figure out that it was an elite commando unit. That is very narrowed down right there.
(I AGREE THAT UNDERCOVER PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE IDENTIFIED. BUT, I DO NOT THINK THAT WAS DONE HERE)
The following article gives a good summary:
-
Six is the elite of the SEAL teams. Even if the link you provided is correct, Biden said it was the Navy and that means Team 6 for that type of mission.
The other group would be Delta Force.

I'd disagree. Six and the Deltas are just part of JSOC. I'd argue that JSOC has a different mission than other special operations command, but they aren't more "elite." They're "very elite with a specific charter." Like, 75th Rangers don't compete with the Deltas for "eliteness," they contribute very different things to JSOC.
It's also my understanding that team 6 and the deltas are who you send in if you want someone back alive. Because alive is harder.
The Air Force also has some JSOC involvement.

In this particular case, considering the venue and considering the target, I think you send the best you've got. Especially with the flight capacity issues, I think you have to send the smallest unit capable of handling the mission. That means SEALS and if it's them, it's Team 6.

Right. My understanding of what both groups do would lead me to guess they or the Deltas would be who you send. But they had some options; JSOC is kinda big.
Also, they're the best at what they specifically do. Like I said, if you want the best of the best for recon work, you don't ask Delta Force. That's within the 75th. Different unit, just as "elite."
