I read 30 or more years ago that Syphilis originated, or at least it was postulated to have originated, in the New World, specifically in the Andes. The Spanish apparently thought so as early as the p perhaps the 16th or definitely, 17th Century. As the saying by the middle of the 18 century went; “T’is better to lose one’s mistress than one’s nose”.
This may only be archeological confirmation of what was already suspected or commonly accepted.
