          That was common in a certain era. They called them ‘railroad apartments’. Actually they still call them that because there’s a lot of them. Especially on the lower east side where they were built for immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

          These days they’re often turned into open floor plan apartments.

            Similar to shotgun houses, of which many were built in NOLA and Cincinnati.

              In certain parts of the Orient, this type of design is termed "bamboo house" -- analogous to bamboo with compartmentalized spaces lined up straight and narrow.

                For the people that first lived in these the other option was probably the whole family in one room so it was an uptick for them.
