57 yo male, motor vehicle collision, C2-3 complete dislocation who survived with only mild weakness, how?
Spinal cord intact?

Yup. In the case report, it says that the patient had had a cervical laminectomy. Perhaps there was enough bone removed to allow the spinal cord to escape injury.
Lucky. Sort of.
