Trump urges US lawmakers to reject spending bill, raising shutdown odds
Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance called on lawmakers to pass a different temporary spending bill than the one unveiled on Tuesday, free from what they called "Democrat giveaways." Trump also called on lawmakers to use the bill to address the nation's debt ceiling, injecting a new element of complexity into the process.

A lot of the problems in this bill stem from a small handful of Republicans who will not vote for a CR as a matter of principle. Because of that, Johnson has to go vote shopping on the Dems side of the aisle.
The Dems know they have leverage. And their votes come dear.

Looks like the GOP will renege on the budget and shut the government down.
Will Trump still get to be President if there is no government? Does the inauguration need federal workers and government funding to happen?
It's all fun and games until Social Security checks stop flowing and Medicare/Medicaid grind to a halt.

Word is Congress has came up with a new funding deal that Trump says he will support.
What's in it? Don't know much, but there is this bit that Trump's Truth Social post calls out: it would suspend the debt ceiling for another two years, to Jan. 30, 2027, after the 2026 midterm elections.

It cuts out the crap. Barebones funding deal along with $100B disaster relief. Key Bridge gets rebuilt, RFK Stadium does not. It’s also ~ 150 pages instead of 1500.
Democrats need to realize 2 things. 1) Trump is more popular in most of their districts than they are. 2) If the funding bill passes the House, then they will be the ones responsible for a shutdown.

Can he pick up a few Democrats? Abigail Spanberger needs show she’s a moderate Democrat if she’s going to win the Governorship of VA, and many of her constituents are CR dependent (for now).

The House of Representatives has rejected President-elect Donald Trump’s new plan to fund federal operations and suspend the debt ceiling a day before a government shutdown.
Almost three dozen Republicans joined Democrats to vote against Trump’s sudden demands and the quick fix cobbled together by GOP leaders. The bill fell 174-235, failing to earn even a majority of votes.
