    Tools.

I was just going through the reconditioned stuff at CPO outlet and name brand tools prices are redikulus. That's why I think Harbor Freight is making money.

HF used to be a store full of Chinese junk with a few hidden gems here and there. A few years ago, they decided to revamp their product lines and go from stuff that was used by homeowners or handymen for a single job or two, to better quality stuff. Yes they still have use it and toss it junk, but you see people shopping there you didn't used to see.

In power tools, you have three lines - Warrior (or Central Electric), Braun and Hercules. The low line is what it's always been. Braun competes with lines like Skil or maybe even a little better. Hercules is a brand you're starting to see on jobsites, particularly some tools...Their portable table saw is pretty durn good. I recently bought a router with both fixed and plunge bases. For about $100. It's a decent router.

In hand tools, the Doyle pliers are what electrical contractors now buy for their job boxes. Almost as good as Klein, at 2/3 the price. In automotive tools, the Icon brand is selling like gangbusters. Professional mechanics are now using them...I recently saw a Ford dealership mechanic and a Toyota dealership mechanic buying Icon tools.

Yes, there are still crap hand tools at HF, but there is good stuff if you want to pay a bit more.

For a homeowner and part-time handyman, check out Braun. If you are a hobbyist, or you like pro quality tools, check out Hercules. And for wrenches, socket sets, screwdrivers, etc., look at the Icon line.

I just found Northern Tools the other day. My daughter's Nevada company needed a couple of pumps that only the store near us had, and the store would not ship them. We went and bought them and had them shipped. I'd never heard of them before.

They've been around for years. Started out as Northern Hydraulics. If you were home-building a wood splitter, they were the go-to guys.
