A New Holiday

Isnt it already required to give people time off to go vote? EDIT: I guess only 28 states have this requirement. Anyway, I am not sure a federal holiday will make much difference to the amount of people that vote. I read that Illinois has a state holiday for election. I wonder if that makes any difference in voting.

My fear has always been people will treat it as an easy 4 day weekend and travel instead of vote. In Brazil voting is mandatory but it’s on a Sunday. @jon-nyc said in A New Holiday: My fear has always been people will treat it as an easy 4 day weekend and travel instead of vote. That is what I was thinking. People take the Monday off and make a four day weekend. To make voting mandatory, would that have to be an amendment or just a law?

In theory but that would never fly here. Countries that do that have national IDs. We have lots of legislation preventing USG from turning SSN into a national ID system. Besides, the last thing the guys proposing this want is for everyone to vote.

Damn skippy. I want voters to have to pass a 7th grade civics test on the function/role/powers of government and on the issues at hand. I also want people that make the effort to engage. It’s a responsibility, not just a right.

And as for ID, the deadline for having Real ID Compliant documents for travel is May 2025. I say waive the charges and make them free.
