Another possibility - men were twice as likely to die from Covid as women, and most of the 1.2MM deaths were in that age cohort. That would cause a measurable shift though surely that’s not the only thing going on.

For me, it seems that the conclusion is that the majority of the people voted for the "less extreme" party.

Most people tend to be in the center. When a party starts to favor the extreme ends of the party and loses common sense, it causes problems for them, and yet history will repeat itself.

Party gets in power, extreme ends gain weight, goes too far, gets voted out of power and the cycle repeats.
