In the days before jet engines, different manufacturers used what was learned in WW2 to try to build faster and larger passenger planes. This is a longish video, but it explains the thinking of how the DC-7 became what it was.
I do wonder if we are going to see a return to bigger prop planes on a lot of regional routes, whether IC engines or electric power. Slower, but more fuel efficient per mile.
