I'm not entirely convinced that whatever is going on in that school, is extremely important. I feel like I'm having a mid-life ideological crisis. The extreme importance of education has always been my cornerstone. I am becoming adrift.

The only way to change that child's stars (or one like him), is for his parent to relinquish authority to the government or a NGO and place him in a boarding school at an early age. Teach him both life and educational skills. Give him access to votech and college prep courses in high school. Give him access to athletics, art, music, service clubs and ROTC.

Sadly, I think some of them have been the products of multiple generations of dumb people and underachievers, so that the deck is genetically stacked against them soaring academically. But some of them will be good and some will be brilliant.

I can't imagine that the teaching staff wake up every day with a song in their hearts. In fact, I really can't imagine what it must be like teaching in an inner-city Baltimore school at all.

I am sure the best of intentions in young teachers filled with idealistic hope to forge young souls, disintegrates after a few days.
