Very cute bunny. Sounds like he has an endearing personality too.

    Education is extremely important.

Yeah, we really lucked out with him.

Puck was great, too, just a very different kinda rabbit.

I think they get a bad rap because, not being very vocal, they're mistaken for being "cage pets." But they definitely have their own personalities and like being among their people.

      Please love yourself.

Sure thing. It's easier to see in the daytime—at night the lighting's so crap that it makes the photos hard to see, but basically he's using Puck's old enclosure. It's a temporary one as he's only there at night, but it's roomy and we all have the unspoken understanding that he could get out if he really wanted to. We have a blanket that serves as a soft ceiling so he doesn't hurt himself if/when he does.

Bagels has run of the house the rest of the time?

Is he litter-box trained enough for that?

Thanks, @blondie! (Great to see ya!)

@George-K Eh, close enough for government work. We might close up the upstairs at night just so he can't get into mischief up there. Or I'll keep him in my room a bit during the day.

It's not that he never, ever poops where he shouldn't. But almost never, he definitely uses his pen more, when he does poop outside of it it's either so dry it's easy to vacuum up or he immediately eats it. (As you probably know, this is healthy for bunnehs.)

In the past week of hanging with me during the day in my room, like 2 pebbles came out.

            Please love yourself.

@George-K This is his pen. It's pretty makeshift as he spends most of his time roaming the house. He likes doinghis own thing but in the same room as everyone else.

Every day to every other day we swap the tarp and clean out his stuff. Takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

So the enclosure is just sitting on a tarp? Does he have any bedding on it?

He's got a bunny bed he never uses. One of his favorite spots is where he's in right now. He never lies on the carpet.

Do you have a litter box in the enclosure for him?

D3 bought these "grids" which she used to create an enclosure, I don't remember what she used for bedding - timothy hay?

For the rest of the cage, I just put newspaper and fleece on top. You just have to change it out maybe once every week, depends how good they are with the litter box. That’s what I used when I caged Whopper and Molly. Bunnies usually automatically pee in one spot but some are better than others. Whiskers was never caged, he was perfect with his box.

All store bought cages are too small for bunnies and it’s going to smell much faster. I built a “C&C cage” for them but now you can buy them. Building it yourself is obv cheaper.

Their bunny is the same breed as whopper 🥰. Theyre such a sweet breed but they’re going to need a solid vacuum in the spring, they shed SO much.

                            @George-K

So, check this. We've been trying to get him to use his own litter box, which he had done decently enough. But the problem was, he'd bust out of his pen every night. So now we more or less let him go free about the house.

Bro actually goes downstairs to use the cat's litterboxes. Not only that but when he was in my work room for awhile, I forgot to leave the door open so he did the stompy thing to let me know. I opened the door, he went down, did his business then came back up.

We didn't try to get him to do this. He just started doing it.

                            Photos because why not.

I dunno about intelligence; they seem to be a mix of smart and intuitive. Unless I'm extremely and I mean extremely careful, he knows damn well the difference between me lying down to say hello to him under the bed, and me lying down to pull him out. (And no it's not a "knowing the time of day" thing.)

I wouldn't trust him to start squeaking long division at me but they aren't at all like guinea pigs, either.

                                    Well, shit.

Poor guy has a fever. In fact it's so high that apparently it screwed with his GI tract and so he can't eat or drink, either. (Apparently for rabbits this is very serious as even 12 hours without water can be life-threatening.)

Not a single fucking vet in my area would see him after hours, so spent the night waking up at intervals to shove some condensed milk in his mouth with a syringe. That seemed to keep him going at least. He's at the vet now. They pretty much insisted he stay overnight because he needs meds for his fever, IV fluids and they need to do something to get his GI tract going again. He's a young rabbit but he still might not make it.

I realize how mundane this problem is and I'm not trying to present it as anything novel or profound. But the lack of novelty doesn't remove the fact that it just fucking sucks that while his adoption cost us a couple of tanks of gas, one overnight visit in the vet ICU is going to cost more than the current worth of my car. It would make all the financial sense in the world to just take him home, "hope for the best" (i.e. watch him die), and then adopt a new rabbit in the course of a couple days. Shit we could use the same pen, the financial hit would be nominal. The vet told us most people in her area never bring their rabbits in to see a vet, ever. Why bother?

There's some kind of threshold in which this would be reasonable. If we had a hermit crab or betta fish, for example, then yeah, that's probably what we'd do. But I can't with our rabbit because he's my pal. He has his own personality and memories and he absolutely knows who I am. So we take the hit I suppose but even then it's not guaranteed he's going to make it.

                                    Fucking sucks.

                                    Please love yourself.
