First it was jarring seeing police with semi auto weapons in foreign countries, then seeing them in US airports and now seeing kids with weapons running around in our cities with police not even acknowledging their presence is just a lot to digest.

Look at the video before the actual shooting, show it to 1000 people and ask them to predict what happens next. I mean it’s so obvious and predictable.

Now if I am on a jury and asked if the shooter was acting in self defense, I would definitely ask what the judge what specifically I am to rule on. Am I supposed to think that open carry is okay or am I to think the guy is a walking time bomb or should I think you should know better than to chase a guy with a gun?

Why can I open carry a gun but not a beer or a joint?

One thing left out in the NYT time line is that as Rittenhouse is running to the police (supposedly to remove himself from harm and to surrender), one of the chasing protesters tries and perhaps does hit him with this skateboard, making him fall.

Imagine you are hit from behind, fall down, a guy jumps on you and another guy with a gun is coming at you. Do you trust that they are not going to try to kill you? What would you do?

I wonder how it affects his case that the open carry was illegal?

Also it’s not legal in WI to use force to protect property that isn’t yours except in a few circumstances that he doesn’t meet. Does that factor in?

Also we still don’t know what happened right before the initial chase.

I think a lot of these protester/rioters are about the same age as Rittenhouse. None of them are making smart decisions.

I thought open carry was legal, just not bringing the gun across state lines? This is why the police did not try to disarm Rittenhouse and his compatriots earlier.

I also understand you are correct that it is illegal for Rittenhouse to try to protect property that is not his.

Not for a 17 year old. I think I read that. I could be wrong.

                1. The kid is not "of age" to open carry in Wisconsin.

                2. He crossed state lines for what purpose, exactly? That could speak to intent.

However, that said, once he's there, I have to wonder how many of his actions were justified. Getting hit from behind is certainly an assault with battery, and he probably has the right to defend himself.

As the NRO article says, though, what was his intent on being there in the first place, and were were the parents.

                ||And we know, don't we, based on James Comey's comments, that "intent" has nothing to do with the liability for prosecution.

                I'm sorry, I had to go there.||

                  Some serious charges.

Rittenhouse, from Antioch, Illinois, is facing six charges in Wisconsin, the most serious of which is first-degree intentional homicide. Under Wisconsin law, Rittenhouse is charged as an adult, and he would face life in prison if convicted of the first-degree intentional homicide charge.

Rittenhouse also faces charges of first-degree reckless homicide, attempted first-degree intentional homicide, two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety and one count of possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18.

He’s getting tried as an adult on the homicide charge yet still facing another charge based on being under age.

I doubt he serves time based on him defending himself.

Pretty sure he is one of those kids that has long wanted to join the military or wanted to be a police officer (he was somehow a self-described trained "EMT" at 17 years old). He is also probably the exact kind of kid you don't want in the police force due to visions of grandeur, etc.

Did his mom really drive him there?

I’ve seen that mentioned but the more trustworthy sites don’t mention how he got there one way or another.

Questions are all logistics, legal assumptions, outcome possibilities.

Showing up to a riot with a rifle is an act of war, but then a riot is an act of war.
