A New York official who led the city’s Covid pandemic response has admitted to clubbing and attending sex parties while advising residents to stay home to protect against the spread of the virus.
Dr Jay Varma, an architect of the city’s vaccine policies who served as senior health adviser to Bill de Blasio, the mayor at the time, boasted about his sexual exploits in secretly recorded conversations with an undercover operative for the conservative podcaster Steven Crowder.
Varma was filmed last month telling an unidentified woman how he enjoyed a night out at “some underground dance party underneath a bank on Wall Street”.
The epidemiologist also describes in the video how he invited eight to ten people to a hotel room with his wife in August 2020 to “just be naked with friends”. He adds: “We were all rolling, we’re all taking molly [MDMA] and everybody’s high.”
At that time, New York was the epicentre of the global virus, with record death tolls. Varma was advising residents to avoid large gatherings and to socially distance.
The woman asks Varma if he thought he would be “given a hard time if New York City found you were having sex parties during Covid?”
“It would have been a big deal, yeah it would have been real embarrassing,” he responds. “I had to be kind of sneaky about it because I was running the entire Covid response in the city. I was looking around being like, ‘F***, I wonder if anybody sees me they’re gonna be pissed’. Because this was not Covid-friendly.”
Varma, who no longer works for City Hall, admitted that he “participated in two private gatherings” between April 2020 and May 2021, but insisted the secretly recorded conversations had been “taken out of context”.
“In those private conversations that were secretly recorded, spliced, diced and taken out of context, I referred to events that transpired four years ago,” a statement said. He said he stood by the advice he gave to New Yorkers and would “take responsibility for not using the best judgement at the time”.
