Michigan tried to get Cornell West off the ballot.

    https://apnews.com/article/cornel-west-michigan-ballot-ruling-4eecb8eddec7db7d17f6d82686286354

Independent presidential candidate Cornel West must appear on the ballot in the battleground state of Michigan, a judge ruled about a week after West was disqualified.

Court of Claims Judge James Robert Redford wrote in a decision released Saturday that West’s campaign submitted the proper number of signatures to qualify for the ballot and that presidential candidates are not required to file affidavits of identity. The ruling came after the Michigan Bureau of Elections informed West on Aug. 16 that he would not be certified because the affidavit of identity he submitted was not properly notarized.

Redford also rejected the state’s findings that West’s affidavit was incorrectly notarized.

West, a leftist academic, progressive activist and long-shot presidential candidate, is at the center of multiple legal and political battles as Democrats and Republicans seek to use the impacts of third-party candidates who could take support from their opponents. Republican allies in states such as Arizona have sought to keep West on the ballot amid Democratic fears he could siphon votes from Vice President Kamala Harris.

    Judge said "Nope..."

Meanwhile, they're trying to get RFK to stay on the ballot despite his request to withdraw his name.

    https://www.axios.com/2024/08/27/michigan-rfk-jr-ballot-2024-trump

Kennedy said last week that he would withdraw his name from the ballot in the key swing states to avoid hurting former President Trump's chances in November.
But in Michigan, one of the states that could decide the election, it's too late for Kennedy to remove his name, per the secretary of state's office.
"Minor party candidates cannot withdraw, so his name will remain on the ballot in the November election," Cheri Hardmon, senior press secretary for Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said in a statement to Axios.

Vote was 5-1 to keep him on the ballot. (3 Republics, 3 Democrats on the commission). Seems kind of bi-partisan.

Seems like they’re following the law. So to have removed him would have been the corrupt thing to do.

What party affiliation did the 1 nay vote have?

                Yup - when convenient.

Michigan wasn't quite as devoted to the law wrt West.

Michigan State Supreme Court rules that man who is not running for president must be on the ballot.

                    Because democracy is at stake.

How do you know? Do you know the specific reason one was taken off and the other was kept on, and how it relates to the law?

I'm not as familiar with the law in Michigan as I should be.

But I find it beyond silly that the Supreme Court insists that a man who doesn't want to run for president be on the ballot.

I suspect the laws are quite specific about what it takes to get on and what it takes to get off. And what the person ‘wants’ is probably not written in anywhere.

I kind of agree with @jon-nyc here. I have read of cases where a dead man dies and he is still on the ballot. He cannot be taken off the ballot due to timing, etc.
