Decades ago, I was sitting in our office, and I was running the schedule of the OR. My colleague, Tom, was sitting across from me. All of a sudden he yelled "Holy crap!" He doubled over in pain, complaining of the inability to breathe and severe, severe, chest pain.
He was not a smoker, and, afaik, had no underlying lung disease.
We took him to the pre-op holding area where a chest x-ray revealed a spontaneous pneumothorax.
We found a heart surgeon who was in the hospital, and a chest tube was inserted to expand the lung. He said it was the most painful thing imaginable.
