Never could do that. Perhaps it's because my vocal range is about an octave and a half.
I'm in awe of people who can "just do it." Carol Burnett was one of the greats at doing that. Just came naturally.

Let’s see … can we blame this on budget cuts that curtailed many music programs in K-12 public schools?

I do t know whether I could or not, but a large barbershop chorus group tried to recruit me. The power of blended voices I suppose.

Hmmm ... you may be on to something.
More people make it past the sixth grade --> more people cannot sing harmony.
Maybe it's "too much education" that atrophied the population's harmony singing abilities. -

Sing harmony nowadays? In the past, even average folks in a Baptist worship service could sing their parts, even if they did it badly.
