First thought...There are too many drones in the world. Highly educated drones, producing nothing.
These folks are comparing a labor intensive crop planted (most likely in this case, although they do use 20hp or so small tractors in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand)) and harvested by hand, with row crops (they included corn potatoes, and darn near everything but rice) that even on small farms use four row equipment.
Shock, shock! Twenty people working together in a rice paddy in a communist society are more collectivistic than a guy plowing a field on a tractor, in the same society.
Wowzers.
Tell them to come down here and talk to some of the best farmers in the world. I know several guys who farm rice/crawfish and/or row crop. Farmers will help each other out, especially if one is sick and it's time to plant or harvest. But collectivism?

Does it matter?
Show me the results. If you've ever managed people in more than one business or even a branch office of the same business, you'll find everything from highly variable cultures to slightly variable cultures, depending on location and the personalities of the people working there.
I'm more concerned with the practical applications. As a manager, how fast can I size up the differences, rearranging people and resources to produce the best product as economically and efficiently as possible?
