    https://cwbchicago.com/2024/07/street-racers-get-probation-for-100-mph-crash-that-killed-tourist-near-midway-airport.html

Two men who crashed their Corvettes during a 100 mph race near Midway Airport, killing a tourist who was walking nearby, have been sentenced to probation. Aaron Guerrero, 29, and Noe Garcia, 37, pleaded guilty before Judge Ursula Walowski on Tuesday.

Prosecutors said Chicago police collected witness statements and video that showed Guerrero and Garcia speeding south on Cicero Avenue, swerving and speeding up to 100 mph in a 30 mph zone around 1:30 a.m. on August 28, 2022.

Just before 65th Street, Guerrero swerved around Garcia’s car and struck a vehicle that was making a legal turn, officials said. After impact, Guerrero’s car hit a 41-year-old woman in a crosswalk as she was walking back to her hotel with a friend. The victim and her friend also had a green light.

Surveillance video showed Garcia driving slowly past the crash scene, then driving away, prosecutors said. Guerrero remained at the scene. His attorney said all drug and alcohol tests came back negative.

Data from Guerrero’s airbag indicated that his car was traveling 103 mph as it approached 65th Street. His car braked to 81 mph, then accelerated to 87 mph before impact.

The article mentions the name of the judge but likely the prosecutor is the real problem here, making the deal and bringing it to the judge in the first place.

          Yup.

This has been an ongoing problem in Cook County.

There's a new State's Attorney coming to replace Kim Foxx who has promoted this type of stuff. I've heard she's a hard-ass.

          Hope she is.

Funny thing is it was an accident. I communicate with Mayla in Spanish so sometimes autocorrect (which is remarkably good at switching languages, even independently of the language your keyboard is set to) does that.

              Yes, but...

Reckless behavior - and I think everyone would agree that racing down Cicero Avenue at 100+ mph qualifies - resulting in a death is not an "accident" from a legal standpoint.

No I meant my use of the accent in Jesús was an accident.

It's negligent homicide and the penalties should apply as such.

Amazing that one can choose to race recklessly sober and the penalties are less for hurting someone than if you drove drunk but within the law otherwise, and ended up hurting someone.
