Israel’s Supreme Court Rules the Military Must Draft Ultra-Orthodox Jews
The court ruled there was no basis to exempt the ultra-Orthodox from service, a decision that threatened to split Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government amid the war in Gaza.

Didn't the Amish?Quakers also get some kind of exemption during WWII? Perhaps it was a non-combatant type of service?

Note: Nixon who was a Quaker served.

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

Seems like most people in Isreal are in favor of ending the exemption. Wonder how this will get implemented and if it will have any effect on the current government.

Another one of these issues that I feel I don’t have the energy to spell out and delve into.

          Life here is complicated

But it’s good that we still have strong Supreme Court.

Mennonites, Hutterites and other conscientious objectors on religious grounds in this country were enlisted as civilian workers to maintain designated federal sites such as National Parks, Veterans’ hospitals and the Japanese internment camps.

Every Jew I talked to today, including two who live in Israel, is celebrating this ruling. Half added a ‘fuck them’ or equivalent.

Admittedly there’s some sample bias, I don’t have any Hasidic friends.
