Biden proposes to ban medical debt from credit reports, loan decisions

The rules set to be announced [by the CFPB] Tuesday would ban credit reporting agencies from incorporating medical debt when calculating credit scores, said the people with knowledge of the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private discussions. The rules would also bar lenders from using medical debt to determine loan eligibility, they said.

Other Democrats are pursuing efforts to address medical debt. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and lawmakers in May proposed legislation that would eliminate all existing medical debt and impose restrictions to limit future medical debt.

Democratic mayors in D.C., New York and other major cities in recent years have worked to relieve residents’ medical debt by purchasing existing balances for pennies on the dollar and immediately canceling it.

A lot of these complications could have been avoided had we just go with single payer universal healthcare.

More than ever, I am becoming convinced that the biggest problems with insurance/healthcare is that we treat it so differently than we do other assets, services, and goods. Single payer would exacerbate the problem. What’s really needed is transparency, competition, and choice. Make people be responsible for their own healthcare investments and options the same way they select anything else in their lives.

Government money seems to corrupt everything it touches. See college tuition.

You should look at the military. Even more than healthcare and education, the military is the one thing most funded by government money. Like, it's 100% funded by government money!

            In normal healthcare, I agree.

But I also believe there has to be safety net. And it is doable.

That way we remove responsibility from the consumer.

And we stick the insurance company with the bad debt.

What will the insurance company do?
                        A. Pass along the debt to us
                        B. Go out of business
                        C. Just create money out of thin air because they are wealthy.
