From The Illimitable Man: "The Dark Triad is an immoral trifecta of personality traits that result in immense personal power. It grants high social status, tight control over interpersonal social dynamics and elicits intense sexual attraction.
[Many] men see power embodied within specific personality traits and they want to know, “How can I be like that?” “How can I be the successful asshole?!” More: https://illimitablemen.com/2013/11/17/understanding-the-dark-triad/
Want to know how dark triad you are? Take this test:

The people I've known in real life who might be considered narcissistic and fancy themselves as Machiavellian, are generally so obvious when they try to scheme that it's almost comedic. The only person who doesn't see how stupid they look is themself.

Yep. Just because you have an antisocial personality disorder, it doesn't mean you're any good at it. Some are, though.

Like toupees, the good ones are the ones you don't know about. Was Bill Clinton one of the most talented practitioners of the dark triad? Or was he a genuinely decent person who went around every day feeling everybody else's pain?

I used to work with one of these people - he got away with it because he had a lot of charm. As somebody else said at the time 'You know he's going to screw you, but you go along with it partly just to see how he'll do it'.
Also, sometimes it was just less work to let him get on with it.

I tried to take the test. The maketing questions after were so voluminous and noxious that I quit.
I'm not that guy anyway. I went out on my own specifically to eliminate those people from my life. They are rampant in the consulting world.
