Saving the planet by a guaranteed early trip to the landfill...

People say cars last longer today. In some ways, maybe they do. But in some ways, they don't.
The video above mentions some of my favorite gripes:
- Right to repair. After the new car warranty expires, any mechanic should have access to the repair codes and parts to repair an modern vehicle.
- Built-in obsolescence. Turbos provide performance, but they shorten engine life. Electronics are nice, but parts become unobtainable after awhile or are hideously expensive.
- Weight reduction to squeeze out 0.1 or 0.2 mpg. Aluminum blocks work well, but they can't be rebuilt as easily. Most guys just chunk them. Cast iron blocks can usually be rebuilt. Is it better to rebuild or chunk?
- Lithium batteries in EV's and Hybrids. Hideously expensive, fairly short lives and a much harder to repair vehicle.
