    What type?

A Bionaire Aer1. In the past we've had Honeywell purifiers. I just go along with it for a peaceful life, TBH.

They have pretty good ratings for a nice price.

Buy a 18” x 18” box floor fan. Buy 1900 merv 13 furnace air filter. Tape filter to back (draw) side of fan. Every bit as efficient and effective as a $$$ air purifier. Cost < $80.

Hmmmm, I wouldn’t want to leave it out all the time, but that might not be a bad idea to put out every night with the kittens coming tomorrow. One upstairs and one downstairs…

We only use them when the air quality is above 7 owing to wild fire smoke. Usually for twenty minutes at at time. Two weeks ago the air was dismal (10+), couldn’t see down the block and the smell of smoke was heavy. The smoke rolled in around 5:30 am when all the windows were open. In the house itself we could not smell any smoke after running the two fans with filters in various places throughout the home (2700 sq ft) and basement (1500 sq ft) after about an hour and a half.

Sounds like something that might be amenable to a "smart plug" and time it to run after bedtime.

I’m actually thinking about it for the bedroom. The cats aren’t supposed to be allowed in there, but that doesn’t mean the dander won’t make it.. Plus, I’m a big fan of circulating air and white noise when I sleep…

It’s a brilliantly simple idea, and due to the fan size, is likely much more powerful than any of these more expensive systems. It’s close to being a secondary HVAC filtration system. They would be a little too loud to use generally during the day, but at night in the areas the cats are at during the day? And if the cat dander is a little too much for me, taking one to my retreat could be very helpful.

            Yeah, that's why it's a non-starter for me.

So run it at night… That’s when most of the dust will have settled, anyway. During the day there is more air movement with people in the room.

Yeah, of course. But the aesthetics of a box fan in the living room with a filter attached are something that Mrs. George might object to.

Dress it up with something cheery, like Xmas tinsel or a flowered throw. Alternately you can hide from view behind something like a couch. It draws air regardless of where it’s located- you could probably even stick it in a closet and shut the door.

If per hair and let droppings are the cause for air quality issues, wouldn't it be cheaper and more thorough to just get rid of the pet? 🤔

I hadn’t realized our box fan had the power coming straight out the back behind the motor… Had to perform a little light surgery on the filter. Also, the 1900 Microparticle filter didn’t actually have a MERV rating on it. A few of the lower numbers (1100 and such) had a MERV rating of 8, but 1900 should be fine, and I’m not really concerned about the virus protection.IMG_2895.jpeg

We are the epicenter of air cleaners. We have 9 of these in the house. In virtually every room it sounds like we're in a B17 flying doing a sortie over Berlin. OTH, theoretically, we should be able to make semiconductors on the dining room table.

My spouse is the driving force for these - having a sensitivity to all things airborne. Of course, we also have a good air cleaning system on the central air.

                              We never open windows.

All of this is why I've largely moved to high end headphones for music listening.
