1900 Chain Bridge? That’s Tyson’s Corner Center. Maybe the most prestigious shopping center in the US, and still incredibly active. The first Apple Store in the world opened at Tyson’s. The first LL Beans outside of Maine…The First Nordstrom outside of the west coast, and God Help Us, the first Spanx store in the US.

It’s been years since I was there but I remember it being nice but not unusually so. IOW better than average but no better than a number of other malls, like the Westchester.

There’s a chance that you were in Tysons Galleria, about a quarter mile down the road, which is your typical upscale mall. Tyson’s Corner Center has a Ritz Carlton on property.
Yamaha has a program where you set up a temporary little kiosk in the common space of a mall for 17 days with 8 pianos, similar to a Costco setup. We did one in Pentagon Fashion Center. Cost us ~ $5K for a 17 day rental, and Pentagon Fashion Center is a decent mall. I checked with Tyson’s first. They wanted $35K.

I might well have been in the Galleria.
They’ll end up, after a lot of drama, with the same formula they use every time they have a trifecta: take away health care and food assistance from low income families and use the money to fund tax cuts for their donors.

Probably the biggest surprise to Tysons Center is how busy it is. It is constantly swamped. There have been a number of luxury apartment buildings that have gone up within walking distance, they put in a Metro station (which ultimately might doom the whole center), and it was a big draw for Capital One to put their HQ there and even build a “concert hall”. That’s in quotes because it’s a lousy hall and did not live up to expectations. The orchestras and such that were planning on using the hall have all pulled out and now it’s used for the occasional broadway tour stuff along with pop shows and comedians.

But here’s the thing. A lot of people were worried about the Metro coming. A Metro had opened up near another upscale mall in Maryland (White Flint) about 25 years ago. White Flint was Tysons competition for swankiest mall at the time. The metro gave a lot of teens and young men of questionable moral fiber access to a very upscale community and wealthy targets. Today, White Flint is a parking lot and the region suffered quite a bit of issues around that area. There’s an attempted revitalization but it’s stalled a bit.
There are indications that we are seeing similar problems develop at Tysons, and this arrest kind of supports that.

In 2010, towards the end of White Flint, I went to work for a dealer and opened a new Kawai, Bechstein, and Fazioli store in White Flint. We knew it was dying, but the rent I got was cheap enough that we would be able to market and advertise. Beautiful store! The 2nd week we were open, some black teens walked in and just started kicking a Bechstein grand. I yelled at than and chased them out of the store, through the mall, and I was the one grabbed by security…

I watched the elevated train being built along route 7 by Tyson's Mall and it reminded me of the elevated train I used to take to go to work in Boston.
What a dump!
Everything within a half mile of the elevated in Boston turned into a ghetto, a big ugly dump.
Then the Big Dig came along and Billions of dollars later the elevated train was gone.
Nobody wants to live or work under, or near, the elevated. It is noisy, crowded, ugly and smells bad.
Someday there will be a very expensive project to remove that el.
Maybe some people in NY and Chicago like to live near the el but it is still a ghetto as far as I'm concerned.
