The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are jointly capitalised at around US$50 trillion as of last year. Astonishingly, this is equal to more than 170 per cent of US gross domestic product.
In comparison, the second largest economy:

I don't really pay that much attention to whatever opinions expressed in the article, but the contrast of the U.S. stock market capitalization relative to GDP and China's captured my attention.
