I can finally play Rach 3!
-
By the way, I remember reading/hearing that Rachmaninoff was a rather taciturn fellow. After the third concerto was played, one of the concertgoers wrote a letter to Rachmaninoff, asking about the opening theme. The letter went something like,
"My Dear Mr. Rachmaninoff,
I recently attended a concert in which your third piano concerto was performed. The opening theme haunts me to this day, and I am struck by the 'ethnic' tone to the theme. Did you rely on any Russian melodies as an inspiration for this theme?
(and he goes on and on...)
Sincerely,
Rachmaninoff replied.
The entirety of his letter:
"No."
