We always did that as kids.

By the way, as kids, we always dyed Easter eggs on Holy Saturday. We used the Paas kits.

Boiled water, food coloring, and a funky wire "egg dipper". With luck, you could get a two-tone egg by dipping one egg, then the other.

My father would take some of the darker-dyed eggs and using a pocket knife, remove the outer, dyed, shell, revealing the white underneath. I don't remember any specific designs, but I remember him doing it.

The "Magic Crayon," iirc was nothing more than a wax crayon that prevented the dye from reaching the shell.

Egg tapping sounds a lot like the British game conkers, which uses the somewhat less brittle horse-chestnuts.

              I was only joking

Never heard of it in Ohio.

Looking at Jolly's Wikipedia link, I don't see anything about this being a tradition in Northern Eastern European countries either. Being of Lithuanian/Russian heritage, I just assumed it was.

It's a strong tradition in many areas of South Louisiana.

And it can be very competitive... Guinea eggs boiled point down in coffee grounds are very good ...

Also around here, we have quite a few families of Czech descent...They paint eggs.
