You know what's worse than a rotator cuff injury?
Rotator cuff arthropathy - arthritis from lack of support in the shoulder from muscle dysfunction. The arthritis becomes really painful and limits function.
Then you end up like this....

My wife's ortho is getting on up there...I guess he's 70 or maybe a year or two older. He's still okay with a knife, but he's gotten slower and tends to refer some stuff nowadays.
But he's like family and he treats my wife like family. Maybe it has to do with the fact she's been his patient for forty years or that his first wife died from complications resulting from rheumatoid arthritis. Regardless, he's always just a phone call away.
The wife had rotator cuff surgery yesterday (5 anchors) and an osteophyte shaved off. Surgery went well and pain is well controlled with acetaminophen and Tramadol.
As we were passing the nurse's desk in Day Surgery, I saw him reviewing some stuff on a tablet and I spoke to him as we passed by. A random thought hit me, as it sometimes does...
Here is this guy, 6AM in the morning, standing there at the counter dressed in an immaculate, knee-length lab coat, dress slacks, wingtip shoes and a white shirt with a Tulane tie. Tall guy with a trimmed white hair and beard, he was dressed the same way you'd see him making rounds or working in his office.
Guy looked like what they'd send over from central casting, when the phone call came in requesting Doctor, 1, senior physician.
Knowing that he would be scrubbing in sometime right after he arrived at the hospital, he still took the time to put on "the outfit". I don't see the young guys do that very much...Not anymore...

First off, I'm glad your wife's doing well. Rotator cuff injuries are no joke. Is she okay with recovery or is it hard for her to rest up?
Second, I think this is a tribe thing. You appreciate when people look like how you expect. And there are always going to be various tribes within one larger community. In this case decked out vs. slovenly doctors.
I once had a surgeon whose uniform was always a ratty Grateful Dead t-shirt. (Not the same shirt, he had a few but they were always the same that way.) I liked the guy. His appearance shouldn't have mattered but it meant that we were at least on the same wavelength about music and standards of decorum, which meant I felt comfortable talking to him.
As far as professionalism goes generally:
- During the Pre-covidian Era, I likely tanked a job interview because I wasn't wearing a tie.
- Last year, I got a job—from a doctor, speaking of doctors—precisely because I had long hair. According to him, guys with long hair is an indicator of creativity. Which is absolutely ridiculous but my point is about expectations. A lot of times they're based on such a mix of societal norms, assumptions based on limited personal experience and shit we see in the movies.

I agree with what Aqua says. Depends on what you are comfortable with and expect. I am like you, and like to see "professional" dress, not everybody does. Some may think it is too "stuffy" or intimidating.

There's an old joke in our office that you can spot the worst engineer in the place because he's the best-dressed person in the building.
