Republican lawmakers in West Virginia have killed a bill that would have banned discrimination against Black hairstyles, known as the CROWN Act, in a blow for Black hair advocates in the state.
...
The state’s most recent version of the bill, SB 496, would have barred discrimination based on “hair textures and protective styles historically associated with a particular race.” ...Two instances of hairstyle discrimination cited: a coach benched a teen over the length of his dreadlocks, another coach demanded a cheerleader change her hairstyle, one that also involved dreadlocks at the time.
Would have loved to hear those coaches explain why they thought it necessary to have acted against certain hairstyles, but here we are -- a state fighting over whether to have a law to prohibit discrimination against certain hairstyles.

In Football? It’s easily explained. Notice the benching was over the length of the dreadlocks. The kid is putting himself at risk.
