I think that's the best thing I've watched this year. Thanks.

So, I showed this YouTube to my wife and she said that if I ever smoked a pipe in the house the next smoke I'd have in my lungs would be from a running car in a closed garage. (Kidding, I hope.)

I'd like to have a room like that, too.

He started making these in lockdown, and has kept it up. I'm pretty deep down the rabbit hole at this point, having watched about 20. They're excellent.

He's got a handful on Tolkien, and many of the recent ones are excerpts from his new Arthurian ballads, which he will be compiling into a book. They're amazing. Extremely good writing.

        Please love yourself.

The beard, the hair, the eyebrows… Let’s face it guys, he probably doesn’t have to worry too much about what the old lady says about smoking a pipe…

He reminds me slightly of my dad, although he was slightly less extreme in mannerism and didn't have the beard. His office (a/k/a part of the family dining room) did rather resemble that room on occasion.

Pipes are such a pain in the ass. So much paraphernalia has to be toted about. Tobacco pouch, tamper, lighter, cleaners, bowl scraper....

And, if not properly prepared, a pain to keep lit.

Then there's the "snob" factor. Not in this case, but, don't you always sorta look at some twat (is that the right word here?) with a pipe as being pretentious?

                  😆

My dad smoked one well into his 50's, and somehow managed not to. He never quite seemed himself after he gave it up.

So did mine, as a matter of fact. I suppose I'm talking about the self-worshipping academic types. Students and faculty.

Of course, smoking is not as common now, so these creatures need another way to assert their self-importance. Probably by announcing that they're vegan or trans.

                      Mensa

My father the professor joined Mensa about the same time he started with the pipe.

Neither lasted very long, we ridiculed him mercilessly.

Pipes can actually smell good and are much cheaper than a Yankee Candle.

Very common to see pipes at a Renn Faire. Trust me, it isn't a self-importance thing, it's a hippie thing.

Fountain pens, too. There are two groups: old men who use Mont Blancs, Parkers and Crosses, and nerds who use TWSBIs, Pilots and Lamys and each doesn't know the other exists.

My dad came from a very different world than I did - English public school (i.e. private boarding school), followed by Cambridge University. His parents were fairly well-to-do. He escaped it (quite possibly deliberately, it's a long story) to become a scientist in the north of England, but he never really escaped the look. Tweed sport-jacket and a vaguely bemused air. The pipe fitted him perfectly. I did receive a fair amount of teasing from my friends, but he was so genuine and well-liked an eccentric that nobody ever thought the worse of him.

                            I was only joking
