The GOP shoots itself in the foot again
-
As I said in another thread, the Republics were for border control before they were against it.
President Trump tells them to lick his shoes, and they line up to do it.
As the Republican lead negotiator said:
During an appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday, lead Senate GOP negotiator Lankford noted some people were "functioning off of internet rumors of what's in" the bill's final text that's in the final stages, "and many of them are false."
Lankford noted the "internet rumors" during a "Fox News Sunday" interview during which he said the bill "focuses on getting us to zero illegal crossings" per day.
"There's no amnesty. It increases a number of Border Patrol agents and it increases asylum officers. It increases detention beds so we can quickly detain and then deport individuals," he told Fox anchor Shannon Bream.
"It focuses on additional deportation flights out. It changes our asylum process so that people can get a fast asylum screening at a higher standard and then get returned back to their home country," Lankford added.I think that Speaker Johnson is putting scare words as the below is not true.
[Sen. Chuck] Schumer wants you to sign off on:150000 illegal immigrants entering the country uninhibited per month.
As Mik says above, if the illegals reach an average of 4000/day for a week,
migrants who cross into the U.S. illegally would not be allowed to ask for asylum, and would face swift deportation to Mexico or their home country.

I think that everybody agrees that somethings has to be done on illegal immigrants.
BUT, kind of like the abortion issue, the Republicans "shoot" themselves in the foot. As you mentioned Jolly about the abortion issue, sometimes you need to compromise and my fear is that if the Republicans do not on this issue or continue to just blindly follow what President Trump says, it will come back to them on the elections. It will be a repeat of 2020 and 2022.

What does Trump say that you disagree with other than mass deportations? I don't believe that's in the GOP's sights.
If the 5000/day number is true, are you OK with that? If not, what number - 3000? 2000?
What compromise would you suggest?
Never lose sight of the fact that, on his first day in office, Biden signed about 50 executive orders undoing what Trump had done regarding the border.
And now, here we are.

Trump’s backed off the deportations thing. Though there are a significant number of people that would be quite okay with that, including the Democrat Card Carrying Unions…
-
The good Senator doesn’t address the workers cards. This at a time when job growth has been strictly limited to Governmental jobs that I would expect undocumented aliens would not be eligible for… Add on the insane rent increases along with general inflation? How do you even expect these people to survive without further opening up the public’s coffers? And we can’t afford it. There is not enough money. We are already at extreme deficit and it is growing.

What I am referring to is that President Trump has said he does not want a border deal this year.

I agree. President Biden made this mess 100%. But, he could say that he is going to put a border guard every 5 m, and the Republicans still would not agree to it. It is not in their political interest to have a border deal this year, especially after President Trump told them that.
-
The way I understood it, as portrayed on the news, it was not 4k per day for a week, but that was the total for the week to enable shutting down the border. That is untrue. The number is the average per day for the week. Thanks for distorting the truth, MSM.

Please play the clip where Trump said that. I'm having trouble finding it.

@Mik said in The GOP shoots itself in the foot again:
That is an anti-Trump assumption. I suspect he'd be all for a bill that has what he wants.
Really?

Bold assumptions there; you assume he knows what he wants, what he wants won't change, and what he wants can be contained in a bill.
But, hope springs eternal!

I'll tell you the same thing. Please play or link the clip where Trump said what y'all are alleging.

That’s an assumption that I am willing to make. I suspect what he wants in an immigration bill is his name at the bottom and credit.
That doesn’t mean the bill is worth passing. The government has shown us that despite all conventional wisdom, something is not better than nothing. Quite often, in fact.

Now even Fox News hosts are criticizing the GOP for their opposition to the border deal.
-
“I had a popular commentator four weeks ago that I talked to that told me … 'If you try to move a bill that solves the border crisis during this presidential year, I will do whatever I can to destroy you.'”
NOTE: This was before the bill was even issued to the public and nobody in the public had read it yet.

General Question: What is so bad about the bill that the GOP will not vote for it?
Here are the key changes included in the bill:
— New emergency authority to restrict border crossings if daily average migrant encounters reach 4,000 over a one-week span. If that metric is reached, the Homeland Security secretary could decide to largely bar migrants from seeking asylum if they crossed the border unlawfully.
If migrant crossings increase above 5,000 on average per day on a given week, DHS is required to use the authority. If encounters reach 8,500 in one day, the department is required to trigger the authority. But the federal government is limited in how long it can use the authority.
In the first year, the government can use it for 270 days, then 225 calendar days in the second year, and 180 days in the third year. The authority sunsets after three years.
— Codifies a policy that requires the government to process at least 1,400 asylum applications at ports of entry when the emergency authority is triggered.
— Raises the legal standard of proof to pass the initial screening for asylum, making it potentially more difficult for asylum seekers to pass.
— Expedites the asylum processing timeline from years to six months.
— Introduces a new process in which US Citizenship and Immigration Services would decide an asylum claim without it going through the immigration court system. The process doesn’t apply to unaccompanied migrant children.
— Preserves the president’s authority to designate humanitarian parole on a case-by-case basis. President Joe Biden has used the authority for Ukrainians, Afghans, Cubans, Venezuelans and Haitians, among other populations.
— Includes limited changes that narrow the use of parole at land borders.
— Authorizes 250,000 additional immigrant visas to spread out over five years for families and applies to employment-based immigrants.
— Provides a pathway to citizenship for Afghans paroled into the United States after the US’ withdrawal from Afghanistan and extends the special immigrant visa program for Afghans who worked for the US government.
